Hi Reader Fam,

I've been quiet. Quieter than I meant to be. But I haven't been still — and one morning this spring is a big part of why I'm back. Let me tell you about it.

The career day that reminded me why I started

This spring I spent a morning at my son's school for career day — talking to more than a hundred fourth-graders, fifteen minutes at a time, about my two worlds: HR by day, children's book author by heart.

And then a moment I won't forget: I got to hold an Emmy, brought in by the casting director of Stranger Things, who was there that day too. Standing in a classroom full of kids who looked like mine, I thought about how much it matters for children to see people who look like them doing extraordinary things. My own dream of becoming an author started in a room exactly like that one.

Two teachers stopped me before they ushered their kids out after their fifteen minutes elapsed. One wanted to talk about my illustration process — I hope she goes home and finally markets her own art. The other leaned in and told me she's writing a book, and that seeing me there, being both a professional and a creative, was the sign she'd been waiting for to keep going.

"She didn't need more information. She needed to see that it was possible."

That morning is a big part of why I'm back at the page. Some dreams just need proof that they're possible. Consider this yours, too. 🤍

He has not put this one down — this story is about a privileged kid who is forced go to a wilderness camp, give up all technology and eat vegetarian food. He said he loves it because it's creative.  

 

RAISING CONFIDENT KIDS

Let them read the "easy" stuff

Here's my summer permission slip for you: let your kid read what they love, even if it feels too easy, too silly, or all comics. A child who reads for joy becomes a child who reads. The "good for them" books can wait for the school year — summer is for falling in love with stories.

What I'm working on

First — a little something I finally put out into the world: my self-publishing guide, So, You Want to Be an Author? It's everything I wish I'd known before my first book — for anyone with a story in them and no clue where to start. If that's you (or someone you love), it's linked here.

So — the news that morning helped me finish. I've written two new books, and they're almost here. They're standalones, but they share a heart: I wrote each one for one of my boys — [one for my artist, one for my baller]. More on exactly who they're for very soon.
